Hockey looking for a few good women

The Whistler Women’s Hockey League is holding its annual try-out night and draft on Thursday, Sept. 12, between 8:15 and 9:30 p.m. at Meadow Park Arena.

Players are invited to come out and go through a few skill tests and possibly a scrimmage while the league’s six teams look on. At the end of the night, the teams will draft players to fill any open spots.

Last year 16 out of 20 players got picked up in the draft, and league president Cathy MacLean says an average of about 12 players get selected each year.

"They can’t be beginners, the teams are too advanced right now, but if you have the basic skills and can skate and stop, you’re already partly there," said MacLean.

To register, contact Cathy MacLean at 604-932-4412.

The cost is $10 to try out, which covers the cost of the ice time. Players should bring full equipment, and be ready to play.

For the players, the schedule is being posted on the league Web site at www.whistlerbc.net/hockey/ . Games start on Sept. 19 and the league runs until April.
