While locals are used to doing well in provincial mountain bike competitions, nobody came close in the 2003 Rat Race on the Sunshine Coast last weekend probably because there was no one else to race against.
Locals Dave Burch and Jeff Beatty, racing for the Brodie/Evolution Team, were the only men in the pro downhill event.
"It was pretty cool, pretty low key," said Burch. "Beatty and I basically did shuttles all day, and got a lot of laps in. The race was pretty good, too, because I ended up beating Jeff by a second. I was stoked about that, hes a fast kid."
Angela Teng also made the trip to Roberts Creek, finishing a close second in a long and difficult cross-country race. She finished the course in three hours, four minutes, less than two minutes behind Cynthia Young.
Trevor Hopkins was third among the Senior Elite Men with a time of 2:38:59.
The second event of the B.C. Cup Series, and the first provincial cross-country event, is the Action Quest at Penticton. It will be a full triple crown with cross-country, downhill and four-cross events.
