Whistler Gymnastics hosted it's ninth annual Whistler Summer Classic between June 20 and 22: an event that serves both as a competition and the local club's most significant annual fundraiser.
More than 1,000 spectators joined approximately 420 athletes in Cheakamus Crossing during three days of action. This number includes 36 Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) contestants from Whistler Gymnastics’ competitive development and competitive teams in both Whistler and Pemberton.
These gymnasts united for six gold, six silver and 11 bronze medals across the floor, bars, beam and vault disciplines.
Also partaking were 44 Interclub athletes from Whistler and Pemberton. According to a press release, Interclub is "a performance-based program designed for entry-level to intermediate athletes, focused on building skills, confidence, and a love for gymnastics in a supportive, non-competitive environment."
Vancouver Phoenix Gymnastics finished the weekend in first overall, followed by Sunshine Coast Gymnastics in second and Flicka Gymnastics in third.
"This year was a standout success. The fundraising efforts were made possible thanks to the incredible support of local businesses, dedicated volunteers, and generous community sponsors, including major sponsors Fairmont Chateau Whistler, Alina Gardens Inc., and SNC Ventures Ltd.," said event coordinator Clare O'Dea in a release. "The event was made possible through an incredible collective effort. Parent volunteers, community members, and Whistler Gymnastics staff came together to coordinate everything needed to keep the event running smoothly.
"The silent auction, BBQ and beer garden, and concession stand were crowd favourites, made possible by the generosity of local businesses who donated items, food, and beverages. Judges and coaches were also well cared for, with meals and snacks provided by the community. As Whistler Gymnastics looks ahead to the 10th anniversary of the Summer Classic next year, this year’s event stands as a shining example of what a passionate community, a love for sport, and a team of dedicated volunteers can accomplish together."
