LUNA hosts triathlon

Tri-Huff-A-Lung includes paddle, mountain bike and run

Late and Unique Nighttime Alternatives (LUNA) which hosts alcohol and drug-free events for young adults, is hosting a beginner, no pressure triathlon on Thursday, June 1 at 7 p.m.

The LUNA Tri-Huff-A-Lung course includes a 2 km paddle on Green Lake, followed by a 10 km mountain bike and a 4 km run.

"It could only be described as a cross between the Citta Challenge and Vancouer Sun Run," said Mark Fearman. "It involves all the awesome outdoor activities that allow a Whistlerite to explore the incredible local landscapes but is geared toward completion and not competition."

The event will be alcohol free, but was also conceived as an event to help people who are in the process of quitting something. May 31 is World No Tobacco Day – not that you have to be a recovering smoker to take part.

The first part of the race, a paddle from shore to shore on Green Lake by canoe, gets underway at 7 p.m. Following that stage racers will complete a 10 km loop by mountain bike, mainly on Lost Lake Trails. The run takes place on the Valley Trail. Most competitors should finish well under two hours.

After the race there will be food and entertainment, as well as a collection of draw prizes from Whistler-Blackcomb, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, Whistler Village Sports and Meadow Park Sports Centre. The cost is just $10 to enter, with registration getting underway at the Whistler Outdoor Experience Centre in Edgewater, near the entrance to the high school. All competitors will need a mountain bike, some running shoes, and a little motivation. Wearing the proper clothes for the weather and range of activities is also important.
