This year's Canadian Ski Racing Awards (CSRA) recently honoured a pair of prolific locals: Marielle Thompson was named Ski Cross Athlete of the Year, and Jack Crawford became Alpine Athlete of the Year.
Incumbent Crystal Globe recipient Reece Howden stood next to Thompson among ski cross racers, and Valérie Grenier joined Crawford in the alpine division.
Meanwhile Darrell Maclachlan, former chief of race for men's alpine events at the 2010 Olympic Games in Whistler, posthumously earned the Nancy Greene Builder Award.
"I believe that I can speak on behalf of the whole committee when I say that we are all moved by the incredible performances, efforts, and contributions to alpine skiing in Canada made by each and every nominee, and of course by the winners of these great awards. It is such an honour for us to be involved in this process, and we hope that every selection does justice to the recipient and to the legacy of each award," said Nigel Cooper, committee chair and east representative, in a press release.
"It is bittersweet to award someone posthumously. The selection committee felt strongly that Darrell’s long-term commitment to helping lead and inspire others over his career helped build the Lake Louise World Cup into a classic. Every year his work reminded us what a special place Canada was in the world of ski racing and how it was made possible by many special people. Darrell represented everything good about ski racing and volunteering!"
