Only a handful of Whistler locals made the trip to Silver Star in Vernon this weekend for the first Provincial Snowboard Series event.

Ripzone, the sponsor who stepped up to aid the snowboard events at the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival last spring, recently stepped forward to become the title sponsor for the provincial series as well. The provincial series is a stepping stone to the nationals, where future World Cup athletes are selected.

At the Silver Star competition, the lone Whistler boarder on the podium was Owen Leno, 26. Leno finished third in the snowboard cross events behind Derek Wintermans of Vancouver and Jordan Tetreau of Kelowna.

A larger Whistler contingent will be at the upcoming Ripzone B.C. Provincial Series at Mount Seymour on Feb. 7 and 8. Events will be held at Big White the following weekend.

The provincial championships will be held at Big White in mid-March, and the nationals are scheduled for the end of March at Nakiska and Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.
