Burnaby Mountain was the setting of the third annual Cardiac Classic B.C. Cup cross-country race this past Sunday, with a solid turnout of riders taking part on a course that is heavy on singletrack with technical descents and wider climbs to allow for passing.
Riders tackled between one and four laps of the 10-plus kilometre course, depending on their category.
Marty Lazarksi of North Vancouver added another win to his growing pile, completing four laps in 1:59:16, the only elite rider to break the two-hour mark. Evan Guthrie was second in 2:03:02, followed by Colin Kerr in 2:04:33.
Jean Ann McKirdy won the three lap women's elite race in 1:49:22, followed by Sandra Walter in 1:54:52 and Joele Guynup in 2:00:55.
Whistler's Jesse Melamed won the three lap Junior 17 to 18 category in 1:49:32, more than 10 minutes ahead of the next racer. Coming closest was Jeremy Pelletier of Team Squamish in 2:00:37.
Lauren Rosser of Squamish won the Junior Women 15 to 18 race in 1:40:30 by over seven minutes.
Team Whistler's Trevor Hopkins won the Master 30 to 39 category in 1:46:20 with a gap of over two minutes.
Whistler's Matthew Wentzel raced alone in the Open Citizen 1 Lap race in 59:29.
Andrew Baird of Squamish placed fifth in the Open Citizen 3 Lap race in 2:06:13.
In Under 15 Men, Whistler's Jack Iles was third in 59:31 against kids up to three years older, 11 seconds back of second place.
Routley racing for Canada at Tour de Beauce
Whistler's Will Routley is taking a leave from his factory team to represent Team Canada at the 2010 Tour de Beauce, a six-stage, 900 km UCI America Tour-sanctioned event - the biggest stage cycling race in Canada.
Routley's team for the race includes Keir Plaice, Michael Joanisse, Jamie Sparling, Nic Hamilton, Matthew Bell and Marsh Cooper.
This won't be Routley's first Tour de Beauce appearance. In 2004 he earned the red jersey as the top young rider at the event.
He's missed the race in recent years, opting instead to ride in the Elkhorn Classic where he is a two-time champion.
