Runners top Royal Victoria Marathon

Taber fastest Whistlerite

More than 6,000 runners participated in the 27 th annual Royal Victoria Marathon, Half Marathon and 8K race this past Sunday, taking advantage of cooler temperatures and a relatively level course to post some incredibly fast times.

In the 42.2 km marathon, Steve Osaduik of Nanaimo placed first in two hours 16 minutes and 49 seconds, 12 minutes faster than Shawn Miller of Juneau Alaska. Third went to Victoria’s Adam Campbell in 2:29:10.

For the women, Suzanne Evans of New Westminster placed first and 14 th overall in 2:47:03. Erin Perkin of Oregon was second in 3:06:34, followed by Catherine Irons in 3:07:29.

Several Sea to Sky runners also went the full distance.

Four Seasons Whistler manager Scott Taber was the fastest local, crossing the line in 3:00:28, 48 th overall and 10 th out of 173 in the men’s 40 to 44 race.

Whistler’s Lisa Kallio placed 114 th overall, seventh among women, and first out of 149 racers in the women’s 35 to 39 age category in 3:13:18.

Shizuo Kashino was 228 th overall in 3:25:36, as well as 44 th in the men’s 40 to 44 age category.

Walter Wallgram finished just back in 3:29:49, placing 34 th out of 170 in the men’s 45 to 49 category.

Marilyn Hellier was fifth in the women’s 35 to 39 age category in 3:32:23.

Robert Tan   finished in 3:33:52, 38 th in the 45 to 49 group.

Gail Gafka was 11 th out of 139 in the women’s 40 to 44 race in 3:40:56.

Craig Smith was 117 th in men’s 45 to 49 in 4:15:38.

Loreth Beswetherick finished in 4:52:14, 107 th in the women’s 40 to 44 race.

From Pemberton, Gareth Davies was an impressive 116 th overall, placing third in the men’s 40 to 44 group.

Carrie Reis finished in 296 th overall, eighth out of 102 in the women’s 30 to 34 race.

Gwendolyn Kennedy was 40 th overall and ninth in the women’s 40 to 44 race in 3:38:33.

Katherin Fawcett was 79 th in the women’s 35 to 39 group in 1:52:22.

The half marathon, 21.1 km, had a field of over 4,000 finishers, including a dozen locals.

Daniel Havens was the top Whistler athlete in 105 th overall, fifth in the men’s 50 to 54 category, in 1:29:28.

Jennifer Gottschalk finished in 1:43:21, 23 rd out of 430 in the women’s 35 to 39 age category.

Jonathan Linton was 84 th in men’s 40 to 44, crossing the line in 1:45:44.

Megan Wastle was 49 th in women’s 30 to 34 in 1:48:45.

Sarah O’Brien was 62 nd in the same category in 1:52:30.

Woochan Jeong placed 161 st in men’s 35 to 39 in 1:56:07.

Nicola Hazel was 93 rd in women’s 25 to 29 in 1:57:14, the same time as Lisa Rickli who was 93 rd in women’s 30 to 34.

Brook Baker took a break from downhill mountain biking to race the course in 1:56:24, 50 th in the women’s 20 to 24 group.

Michael Gottschalk was 139 th in men’s 40 to 44 in 1:57:11.

Heather Abernathy just broke the two-hour mark, finishing in 1:59:21.

Christine McCann was 2:02:59, Ru Mehta 2:05:47, Katherine Linton 2:06:24, Kath Ilott 2:05:59, Wanda Chalk 2:12:53, Vicki Swan 2:14:23, Kari Gaudet 2:14:41, Rosalie Dowse 2:14:38, Karen Farr 3:10:29.

From Pemberton, Stephanie Coughlin was 55 th out of 430 in the women’s 35 to 39 category in 1:50:10.

Mark Leverton was 69 th out of 211 in the men’s 50 to 54 group in 1:50:43.

Grace Chadsey was 45 th out of 335 in the men’s 45 to 49 group in 1:52:51.

Joan Swain finished in 2:06:16 and Katie Paulet in 3:10:31.

In the 8 km race, Whistler’s Kimberley Lobb was 63 rd in the women’s 25 to 29 race in 50:01.

Whistler’s Cathy Owen raced in the Okanagan International Marathon the same day, placing 98 th in the 30 to 39 age group in 3:57:01.
