Slow and steady may not always win the race, but nobody can sprint for three hours either.
On Sunday, Feb. 9, Whistler Cross Country Connection is hosting the seventh annual Lost Lake Shuffle, which challenges skiers to see how many laps they can complete of a 3.5 km course in a set time limit.
There is a new format this year, with organizers cutting the time limit for teams of three and solos to three hours from four. There is also a 1.5 hour enduro for solo skiers and junior teams of three, and a one hour short course event for Jackrabbits and families that is appropriate for kids as young as four.
“In past years we have heard four hours was a real test, maybe too much of a test that took too long to recover from,” said Chris Waller. “With so many events through the season this year we want to be sure people can ski the next weekend. We also want to get the kids out and creating a short course gives every child the opportunity to participate.”
All proceeds from the event will go towards the Whistler Nordics youth programs.
The event gets underway at 11 a.m., with the 1.5 hour categories joining at 12:30 p.m., and the Jackrabbits at 1 p.m.
The main base of operations will once again be the Lost Lake Warming Hut, with a DJ on hand to spin out some tunes and Chris Quinlan acting as the master of ceremonies.
Following the race there will be refreshments in the Warming Hut, prizes for the top individuals and teams, and draw prizes for everyone else.
The goal, says Waller, is to get as many people participating as possible.
“You don’t have to be a hot skier to do this, you don’t even need to have your own gear,” he said. “Get a couple of friends or come out on your own for some fun on the trails. The XC season is already nearly two months old and everyone is well skied and keen on participating.”
