Six gymnasts qualify for provincials

Championships in Kamloops next week

The Whistler Gymnastics Club is sending six athletes to the B.C. Championships to represent Zone 5, following a meet hosted by Phoenix Gymnastics in North Vancouver this past weekend.

In the Level 2 Tyro category, Hannah Raffler qualified for the provincials in the top six.

In Level 2 Novice, Whistler gymnasts snapped up four of six spots on the zone team, led by Lenka Prochazka. Other qualifiers are Jasmin Budge, Desirae Smith and Meg Halliwell. Tyece Fairweather was picked as an alternate.

Nicole Halliwell qualified second in the Level 2 Open category. Sonya d’Artois and Maye Akama were also selected as alternates.

The B.C. Championships take place in Kamloops from April 27 to 29, and are a prelude to the 2008 B.C. Winter Games.

Whistler athletes also brought home several medals from Phoenix, competing against the top clubs in the zone.

Lenka Prochazka won silver on vault, gold on bars, gold on floor and finished sixth on beam to finish second all around.

Jasmin Budge earned a silver on the beam, and was fourth on bars and fifth on floor to place fourth all around.

Desirae Smith was fourth on floor, fifth on vault and beam and sixth on bars to finish fifth all around.

Meg Halliwell earned a bronze on the beam, and was seventh on bars and floor to place seventh all around.

Nicola Halliwell won silver on the vault and floor, bronze on the bars and was fifth on the beam to place second all around.

Sonya d’Artois was fifth on vault and seventh in the other disciplines to finish sixth all around.

Maye Akama finished top-10 in all her events, placing seventh on vault, eighth on floor and ninth on bars and beam.

Hannah Raffler earned a bronze on vault, was fifth on bars and floor, and placed seventh all around after a 10 th on the beam.
