Spots open for Showcase Showdown pipestyle

$25K of prize money for top snowboarders

The organizers of the ninth annual Sapient Showcase Showdown – and first ever pipestyle event – released a drawing of what the lower halfpipe on Blackcomb will look like on Feb. 24-25.

There will be a couple of hips up top for extra air, wall rides/boxes along the middle section of the wall, step-ups to the wall on the lower part of the pipe, and kickers to a mix of boxes, straight rails and kinked rails at the end of the halfpipe.

Pipestyle is a completely new format for an event, mixing terrain park stunts into a conventional superpipe to test skills and guts to the fullest. Organizers have also upped the stakes with $25,000 in cash prizes and another $15,000 in supplier prizes for participants, and are hoping to attract some of the top pro riders.

The breakdown of men’s cash prizes includes $10,000 for the first, $4,000 for second, $2,000 for third, $1,000 for fourth and $500 for fifth. For women, there’s $5,000 for first, $2,000 for second and $1,000 for third.

The contest is also open to the general public, with a qualifier on Feb. 24. To register, contact Whistler-Blackcomb Guest Relations at 1-800-766-0449, or drop by any Guest Relations desk.
