Last weekend Whistler Secondary hosted the Senior Girls Volleyball Classic, inviting schools from as far away as Lillooet and Richmond to take part.
Both the junior and senior Storm teams from Whistler Secondary took part, and played one another in the first round of the tournament on Friday. The first series was a split with the Whistler juniors and seniors taking one win apiece.
In their next game the juniors beat the Howe Sound Secondary School with two straight wins, 25-15 and 25-22.
On Saturday the junior team faced Richmond Christian, which went on to win the tournament, and lost in the tie-breaker 15-12. In the process, Whistler handed Richmond Christian their only loss of the round robin.
Whistler went on to split games with Lillooet Senior High, winning 25-11, losing 25-19, and losing the tie-breaker 17-16.
The final game was against Pemberton, who finished second in the tournament. That was also a draw with Whistler losing 25-22, then winning 25-21. There was no tie-breaker due to time restrictions.
The Whistler Wildwood provincial women’s team is hosting a Volleyball B.C. tournament this Saturday, Nov. 12, at Whistler Secondary school. Spectators are welcome to come out and watch Whistler’s two women’s teams, Wildwood and Whoosh, take on some of the top women’s teams from around the province.
B.C. Winter Games brings back leadership program
Ever wonder what it’s like to compete in the Olympics or Paralympics? Or what it takes to get there?
When Trail hosts the B.C. Winter Games this February, the B.C. Games Society and 2010 LegaciesNow will be sponsoring the sixth B.C. Olympic and Paralympic Youth Leadership Academy.
The academy is open to 50 youths from around the province in Grade 9 and 10, and over four days allows participants to experience all three pillars of the Olympic movement – sport, culture and the environment.
They will attend seminars to hear inspirational stories from B.C. Olympians and Paralympians, discuss ways to include Olympic values in their daily lives, and attend workshops on team building and leadership development. They will also be given volunteer positions within the B.C. Winter Games, giving them an up close view of the action.
The academy takes place from Feb. 23-27, and includes transportation, accommodation and food.

Alpine Canada inks new deal with Husky
On Tuesday, Alpine Canada Alpin signed yet another new long-term agreement to benefit ski racing in Canada.
Husky Energy, which has supported ski racing in the past through the Snow Stars program as well as individual athletes, signed on to become the presenting sponsor of the upcoming 2005 Lake Louise Winterstart World Cup races. The deal is part of an increased six-year marketing partnership between Husky and the ACA, extending the current contract, which was to end in 2005, by three years.
Husky will also continue to provide funding and support for the Husky Snow Starts, Husky Grade 2 Funpass, and a Husky credit card rebate program that generates funding for ski racing at the local, provincial and national levels.
With the decision to extend the contract, Husky has been named the exclusive Energy Sector/Convenience Retail Partner for Alpine Canada Alpin, the Canadian Alpine Ski Team and Canadian Disabled Alpine Ski Team.
