Last week we erroneously released a list of skiers chosen to participate in the 2002 Canadian Alpine Ski Teams summer training groups. Here is the corrected list with a couple of important Whistler additions which was posted by Alpine Canada Alpin on May 30.
A few of the racers from last years team werent included in the training group "and are on their own" this summer according to ACA president Kerry Moynihan. These include Chad and Megan Mullen of Banff, Alberta, Kevin Wert of Rossland, B.C., and Luke Sauder of Cambridge, Ontario.
"These racers werent endorsed by the selection committee, which ruled that they have not met criteria," said Moynihan. "All the criteria are based on performance and ranking, theres no subjectivity in the selection process. We had to draw a line in the sand based on the money we have."
Although funding to the program has actually increased in the past year seven fewer skiers were invited to the summer training group. The group will travel to Oregon, Chile, Switzerland, Austria, and France, and will Heli-ski in Blue River, B.C. Athletic Director Joze Sparovec also plans to integrate the program with other national ski teams such as the Austrian, German and Swiss teams during the training months.
To complement the on-snow routine, the ski team heads into the third year of the "unified approach" to conditioning with an intense cross-training program designed and co-ordinated through the National Sport Centre at the University of Calgary.
"Weve had a lot of success with this approach to training," said Sparovec, referring to the 12 World Cup podiums obtained by the Canadians since the program started in 1999. "With the program we have in place, the athletes will be getting sport-specific attention in a team-oriented atmosphere.
"The selection of this group reflects our focus on podium performances in Salt Lake City at the Olympic Winter Games next February."
Chad Mullen will join the team along with Whistlers Jeff Hume and Calgarys Jeff Durand, but all three athletes will pay their own way. The national and development teams for the 2001 and 2002 seasons wont be selected until November.
