A pair of young Whistler Kendo Club (WKC) members recently competed at the 2024 Canadian Junior Kendo Tournament.

Leo Sato acquitted himself well, earning a top-eight finish in his particular division. James Tsang ended up in the top 16.

"Everyone had a great performance," said WKC founder Hiroaki Yano, fresh off his own tournament victory in Washington. "[Leo and James] have been doing kendo only for two years now and never had won [a match] until this tournament. They have proven that they are growing day by day. I am excited to see how they perform at the next tournament, which is coming up in June."

Yano himself was coaching the British Columbia junior squad at Nationals in Burnaby. Under his tutelage, both the U19 girls' and boys' teams secured first place.

"Hopefully, Whistler kids are going to be on [the B.C. Team] in the near future," Yano added.
