In its 12 th year, the Whistler Valley Trail Run on Sunday, May 25 kicks off the summer running season for many locals, with both 5km and 10km courses to choose from, and spots for runners and walkers.
With endurance events attracting record numbers these days, organizer and race director Paul Vacirca of the Mountain Adventure Centre is hoping to turn the event into a fundraiser for childrens programs.
"Our goal is to raise $5,000 for local childrens charities," says Vacirca. The money will be distributed to various charities through the Whistler-Blackcomb Foundation.
In keeping with the spirit of the event, the Valley Trail Run will be followed by a first-ever Teddy Bear Trot for children under 10. The course for that event is just 400 metres, and children are encouraged to bring their teddy bears or favourite stuffed animals along for the run. All kids will be running with bib number one, and it promises to be a great photo opportunity.
As usual, the event is also looking for volunteers to help marshall the race course, mark the finish line, hand out water, and cycle ahead of the group to keep it on course.
To register in advance and save $10, drop by Nike @ Whistler in the Pan Pacific Lodge before May 10 to pick up and drop off your entry forms. Between May 11 and May 24, the price goes up to $24.
Day of race registration, from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. is $30.
The race gets underway at 9 a.m. in the Whistler Day Lot opposite Village Gate Boulevard, and finishes at the base of Whistler Mountain.
