Blowing snow and limited visibility wasn’t enough to keep almost 70 racers from taking part in the third event on the Kokanee Valley Race Series calendar on Jan. 22 – a tough super G down Gandy Dancer with a 390 metre (1,280 foot) vertical drop.
Despite the conditions, there were some close races. In the Pro Men’s division, Whistler Mountain Ski Club coaches finished just nine one-hundredths of a second apart, with Rob Boyd taking the win.
The race was even closer in the men’s 40 to 49 category with Rick Lewon edging Scot Elder by just 0.05 seconds.
The winner of the Atomic GS race skis in the post-race prize draw was Marjorie Lauzon.
The series will break for a couple of weeks before picking up again on Feb. 12 with a slalom on Whistler. To register, drop by any Whistler-Blackcomb Ski School Sales or Guest Relations location, or get to the Dave Murray Video Centre before 10 a.m. on race day.
In the meantime, racers can take part in the first Adult Weekend Race on Feb. 1, a giant slalom on Lower Franz’s Run. Register before 10 a.m. at Raven’s Nest to take part.
The following weekend, Feb 6-7, is the Appleton Rum Peak to Valley Race. This event has been sold out since the summer.
