The Whistler 50 Relay & Ultra was back again this past weekend as hundreds of runners took on one of the area's favourite beginner-friendly ultramarathons.

A mixed division team, TBirds & Co., locked up overall first place among relays in a time of five hours, eight minutes and 24 seconds. Not too far behind were the all-female TTB Madels with a very impressive runner-up effort (5:40:55), while the mixed team Just Peaking rounded out the podium (5:46:09).

Matt Luongo of Port Moody prevailed in the solo ultra event (3:23:28) ahead of Vancouverite Paul Blazey (3:28:57) and Kitsilano native Cameron Slack-Smith (3:29:46). Sarah James from North Vancouver found the speed for fifth overall and tops among women (3:49:29).

The race's 10-kilometre loop winds north from Whistler Olympic Plaza past Lost Lake before curving south past the Scandinave Spa and Spruce Grove. Solo runners competed five laps, while members of eight-person relay squads did one lap each and four-person relays knocked down two laps apiece.
