As temperatures begin to rise outside, the Whistler Boxing Club (WBC) is shifting towards a more recreational focus during summer months.
Beginning in August, the WBC will offer free classes twice a week to youngsters aged between eight and 12. Head coach Sasha Gier describes these programs as "a great opportunity for kids to learn the fundamentals of boxing in a fun, supportive environment."
Meanwhile the Club's breakout athlete, Leo Laferriere, is taking the summer off after winning each of his last four bouts by unanimous decision. Two of Laferriere's peers, volunteer firefighters Joe Knight and Brock Trojahn, are getting ready to step into the ring at an Aug. 9 event organized by the Nanaimo Professional Firefighters Charitable Society.
"We are happy with [Leo's] progress," Gier said. "Leo is graduating from Pemberton High School and needs to focus on other things besides fighting. We’re helping guys [like Joe and Brock] to get ready by giving them more sparring time in the ring. Our competitive fighters are also sharing their experience with them."
