Whistler’s Matthew Bonin, a bantam-aged player (born 1993-94) who as been playing with Whistler’s Midget A team has been selected to play for Zone 5 in the Under 16 B.C. Amateur Hockey Association provincial championships. As well, Bonin has been selected to represent Canada at an under 16 tournament in Nagano, Japan, held to mark the 10 th anniversary since the Nagano Winter Games. Teams from all over the world are taking part, and as the host of the 2010 Games, B.C. assembled a team of top players from each zone to represent the province.
Janyk nominated for athlete of the year
Whistler’s Britt Janyk is one of the finalists for Sport B.C.’s Athlete of the Year awards, which will be presented on March 5 in Vancouver. Other nominees in the Senior Female Athlete of the Year category include Summerland’s Kristi Richards, who is a standout on the national moguls team, and triathlete Kirsten Sweetland.
Nominations are typically based on results — such as Janyk’s two World Cup medals this season — as well as the athlete’s contributions to B.C.’s sporting community.
Lost Lake Shuffle this weekend
For the seventh year in a row the Lost Lake Shuffle will be taking place this weekend — a Nordic Enduro that everyone can participate in.
Hosted by Cross Country Connection, the three-hour Enduro event gets underway at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10 as skiers rise to the challenge of seeing how many laps they can complete of a 3.5 km course in a set time limit. Bib pick-up begins at 9 a.m.
The one-hour family event begins at noon while the 1.5 half Enduro gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
Following the race there will be refreshments at the Lost Lake Warming Hut, the main base of operations, along with prizes.
