Earlier this summer, a total of 69 boats took part in the 2023 Whistler Regatta, and a record 26 of the 81 competing sailors represented the Whistler Sailing Association (WSA).

Zach Astle was the only local to win his category, prevailing in the Laser 4.7 fleet while club-mate Owen Staniforth finished second.

Over in the Laser Radial contest, Lira Ilyasova claimed the runner-up spot ahead of James Cannon in fifth and Kaden Giese in eighth.

Adriana Giese wound up fourth in the red Optimist fleet and fifth overall. Fellow locals Dinara Ilyasova and Devan Radtke found themselves 11th and 12th respectively.

Sailors and race organizers did an admirable job battling through smoky conditions on August 19 and 20, which dampened the afternoon southerly thermal that drives wind on Alta Lake. Optimist boats participated in three races, while the Laser and Pirate fleets each sailed twice in a mild northerly breeze.

In other news, the WSA's annual general meeting, boat haul-out and potluck are scheduled for September 30 beginning at 9 a.m.
