Squamish police say two tow truck drivers were arrested on June 30 and charged with the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and drug-impaired driving.

At about 10:55 p.m. that day, RCMP received reports of a tow truck driving erratically in the Brackendale area, according to a news release from Mounties.

Other callers to law enforcement reported the truck had hit several cars.

Officers located the truck, driver, and passenger after spotting the vehicle speeding and smoke coming from the truck.

Police say the truck had "fresh and extensive damage."

Officers determined the driver had recently hit another car, causing pieces of the truck to fall off and fluids to leak.

Further investigation revealed that the driver was high on drugs and was arrested.

The passenger had earlier driven the tow truck and hit another car. Police also arrested the passenger for impaired operation by drug, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

After providing blood samples at the local hospital to determine impairment levels, police released the driver and passenger with future court dates.

"Even though property damage was quite extensive, fortunately, there were no injuries to anyone," said Cpl. Angela Kermer of the Squamish RCMP in a news release. "Community and police co-ordination really helped stop this event from evolving further."
