A black bear (not the bear pictured) is reportedly accessing cars in Whistler's Bayshores neighbourhood.

Bear activity is ramping up in Whistler as winter approaches.

According to police, a "problematic" black bear has been entering people's vehicles in the Bayshores neighbourhood.

Police have fielded "several calls" over the last few days about the bear, which is accessing cars on Callaghan Drive and Sproatt Drive.

Just after midnight this morning, police received a call that the bear was trapped in a vehicle.

"Members attended and had to open the door to get the bear out on several occasions from several different cars," said Sgt. Sascha Banks, in an email. "Vehicles were extensively damaged and the bear returned to the wooded area in the neighbourhood.  BC Conservation has been contacted regarding these incidents."

Residents are reminded to secure all bear attractants and report bear encounters by calling COS at COS at: 1-877-952-7277.
