Heavy rain is expected in Whistler and the Sea to Sky into Sunday.

Batten down the hatches: it's going to get blistery out there.

In a special weather statement issued Saturday morning, Environment Canada said it expected 50 to 70 millimetres of rain to fall before Sunday night.

"An atmospheric river is setting up over the B.C. South Coast this weekend," reads the statement. "Periods of rain will gradually intensify to heavy rain late overnight and continue through Sunday evening. Total rainfall amounts near 50 to 70 mm are expected for most regions, except 80 up to 100 mm over the North Shore Mountains and Howe Sound. Coastal regions near Boundary Bay will also see strong south winds 50 km/h gusting to 70 tonight and Sunday morning."

Heavy rain will let up on Sunday as the system moves on, the statement said.

"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions," it said.
