Two athletes partake in a Coast Cup team sprint event.

Local cross-country skiers will want to mark Jan. 20 on their calendars, for that's when the Coast Cup returns to Whistler Olympic Park (WOP)

A change of pace is in store: the team sprint. Hosted by Spud Valley Nordics, this format presents a rare opportunity for athletes to race with one another. This Saturday's event is designed to appeal to all ages and skill levels, from the beginner to the competitive skier.

Participants under the age of eight will ski a mad dash together, while older racers will compete in pairs with each completing three laps of a short sprint course.

Parasitting and parastanding categories are also included. Athletes are also welcome to wear costumes if desired.

Registration closes Jan. 16 at midnight, with those interested able to apply here. The organizing committee will do its best to pair up individual entrants.

In other news, six local skiers and biathletes have recently qualified for the 2024 BC Winter Games from Feb. 22 to 25 in Quesnel.
