A local wrestler has taken a big step forward in her young career.

Mariza Nasu struck gold at the 2025 Canadian Wrestling Championships, which were held from May 29 to 31 at the University of Alberta. Representing Coast Regional Training Centre (RTC), Nasu’s victory in the cadet women’s 43-kilogram division netted her a spot on Team Canada for the upcoming U17 Pan American Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Coast RTC received the Club Team Award for ladies, reflecting a greater trend of success as British Columbia finished atop the cadet women's overall standings.

A press release notes that "the Canadian Wrestling Championships serve as a critical platform for identifying and nurturing wrestling talent, determining national champions, and selecting members for Canada’s national teams across various age groups.

"Mariza Nasu’s dedication and hard work have not only brought pride to Squamish but also positioned her as a rising star in Canadian wrestling. Her upcoming participation in the Pan American Championships marks a significant step in her athletic career, and the community eagerly anticipates her performance on the international stage."
