Whistler Gymnastics Club athletes recently took part in the 2023 Aviva Cup Invitational from April 7 to 8 in Coquitlam, B.C., where a handful of youngsters made their coaches proud with solid efforts.
Ula Morrissey distinguished herself by placing first on vault and third on floor, which was enough to propel her into fourth place in the Xcel Silver all-around rankings for those born in 2013.
Morrissey's teammate, Isabelle Shaw, vaulted to third. She was fourth in all-around for 2011 birthdays.
Casey Gilbank, born in 2008, wound up third in vault, good enough for fifth in all-around. Kastle Pazdzierski delivered a third-place effort on bars and was sixth in all-around in the same age bracket.
The Aviva Cup Invitational also marked the competition debut for Whistler Gymnastics Club's youngest athletes. Though participants in this age group are not scored to be ranked, they acquitted themselves well in what head coach Karin Jarratt calls "a very successful meet."
Phoebe Chiu earned the Fabulous Floor Award, while Amber Hunt locked up the Dynamic Vault Award.
Back in February, the club had a respectable outing at the Christy Fraser Memorial Invitational. Higher-level Whistler Gymnastics athletes will next compete on May 21 in Victoria.
