The 15th annual Whistler BioBlitz is set to kick off on June 7—with a few changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
From June 7 to 11 BioBlitz scientists will be giving virtual presentations to students at Myrtle Philip Community School, Spring Creek Community School, Whistler Secondary School, and XetÌ“ólacw Community School in Mount Currie.
Then in the last week of July, the scientists will continue their annual survey to uncover new species on Whistler’s biodiversity list.
Meanwhile, a free community BioBlitz Talk is set to take place via Zoom on Wednesday, June 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to discuss old-growth forest and forestry in B.C. and Whistler with host Dr. Rachel Holt.
Last year, Holt co-wrote a report called B.C.’s Old Growth Forests: A Last Stand for Biodiversity that recommended actions to keep the province's poor old-growth forest conditions from getting worse.
Local biologist and forest ecologist Bob Brett will speak to local old-growth forest.
