The Whistler Community Services Society’s Re-Use-It Centre is urgently requesting Whistler residents to make their donations to the store during working hours.
“When people donate goods after we are closed, or before we are open in the morning, quite often we do not end up getting them. There is a criminal element that picks over these donations daily and takes whatever they wish,” said Lorna Van Straaten, store manager.
The store in Function Junction is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. People are encouraged to make their donations during those hours.
The store does not accept broken furniture; appliances that are not working, couches and mattresses. But people are dropping these off at night to avoid having to pay landfill costs. Instead, it is the store that has to pay to take them to the landfill.
The Re-Use-It Centre now has to make daily trips to the landfill to try and stay on top of the problems caused by donations that cannot be sold. Landfill costs have tripled since the transfer station moved to the Callaghan Valley.
The WCSS Re-Use-It Centre is a non-profit business, with proceeds funding over 25 social programs and services offered by WCSS. Theft and additional costs take away from those programs.
