Whistler Councillor Steve Anderson is facing assault charges.
The charges stem from an alleged incident in Pemberton on Aug. 2.
Whistler RCMP received a call regarding a domestic dispute at a residence on Airport Road in Pemberton, said Sgt. Rob Knapton, in an email.
"As a result of the investigation, police arrested a 62-year-old Pemberton resident for assault. The male was later released from custody to appear in court at a later date," Knapton wrote. "Charges were laid on Aug. 13 against Steven Bradley Anderson for two counts of assault stemming from this incident."
A spokesperson with the Prosecution Service confirmed the counts were in relation to two different individuals.
Knapton could not provide more details.
Reached by phone, Crown counsel Adam Flanders declined to comment.
Anderson was scheduled to appear in Pemberton Provincial Court on Aug. 28.
The matter was adjourned to Sept. 18.
Reached by phone, Anderson said he could not comment on the record at this time.
His lawyer, Greg Diamond, provided an emailed statement: "We cannot comment on the case as it is before the Courts. My client denies the allegations and is confident that his name will be cleared."
In an emailed statement, a Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) spokesperson said the municipality is aware of the charges against Anderson.
"The charges are unrelated to his duties as a member of council, and any outcome will be determined by our justice system," the spokesperson said.
"Councillor Anderson has advised the RMOW that he is requesting a leave of absence for the duration of this process to avoid this issue becoming a distraction to the business of Council."
Being charged with a crime does not disqualify a councillor from eligibility for office, or from performing their duties.
Anderson was first elected to Whistler council in 2014.
He serves on the RMOW's Illegal Spaces Task Force, Liquor Licence Advisory Committee, Transportation Advisory Group and Audit and Finance Committee
