BBQ Championships return to Dusty’s

Weekend of competitive barbecuing features slow cooking, secret sauces and holy smoke

The Kings of the Grill are moving in this long weekend for a few BBQ action packed days.

The Canadian National BBQ Championships are taking place at Dusty’s Bar and BBQ in Creekside July 29-31. The festivities will showcase pros and amateurs going at it for a little BBQ fame and fortune. Events include cook-offs, cocktail contests, music, and activities for BBQ fans. With close to 50 teams barbecuing and an anticipated 1,500 spectators the fourth annual championships should be the event of the weekend.

The championships kick off Friday, July 29 with a BBQ Whole Hog Demonstration by Myron Mixon. The World BBQ Champion will be firing up the coals at 7 p.m. to prep a whole hog that will be served 24 hours later. At 10 p.m., Whole Lotta Led, Whistler’s favorite Led Zeppelin tribute band, will take the stage.

The celebrations continue on Saturday with Local’s Day. Anyone with a flare for the grill can take aim at the $2,500 in cash and prizes that are up for grabs. Contests run through the day and include the Budweiser King of the Grill Anything Goes Grilling Contest, the Bull’s Eye Backyard Burger Championships and the first ever Appleton Rum Cocktail Contest.

Guitar Doug will commandeer the patio starting at 2 p.m. and at 10 p.m. Dusty’s regulars Cousin Harley will be in the house. The three-piece rockabilly band fronted by Paul Pigat is always a crowd pleaser with their gritty jive, jump blues and retro rock ’n’ roll sound.

Sunday will see the pros fire up their barbecues for some serious competition. Competitors hoping to claim the title of Canadian Champion will compete in the categories of Beef Brisket, Pork Shoulder, Pork Ribs, and Chicken. The winnings include cash prizes and an invitation to the World Championships in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Samples will be available to spectators as they last. However, if you’re keen on getting a taste, VIP tasting passes are available and will guarantee you some of the goods. Passes cost $5 and can be purchased at Dusty’s, with the proceeds going to charity.

Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. will see the return of Guitar Doug to the patio, providing an opportunity for spectators to kick back, relax and digest after eating their way through the best barbecue this side of the Mississippi.
