Jeanie emerged in mid-May with her sixth litter for a total of 12 cubs since 1997. This is the first time Jeanie has produced three cubs (black, brown and light brown. As the family encounters a bobcat, Jeanie rears, expressing that decisive moment where she communicates to three anxious cubs to flee to the nearest tree island for safety. As of May 31, it was confirmed that Jeanie did lose the black cub from (likely) an attack by an adult male (reproductive strategy), coyote (for food) or adult female aggression (competition). Jeanie will be faced with three hardships this year; aggression from males during breeding season (June), space conflicts with other female bears (Katie) and mountain bikers, and the possibility of a late berry crop resulting in the temptation to visit human food sources.
