Six local charities will split more than $43,000 as a result of the Feb. 9-10 BC Tel Mobility Winter Classic Blackcomb Foundation fund raiser. The Whistler Children’s Centre will receive the largest single donation, $14,000. Other beneficiaries include Whistler Search and Rescue ($8,850), Pemberton Search and Rescue ($7,500), Whistler Community Services ($6,300), the Peter Xhignesse Memorial Fund ($4,000) and Family Services of the North Shore ($3,000). The fourth annual Blackcomb Foundation event included a wine and cheese reception Feb. 9, a mountaintop dinner and auction Feb. 10 and two days of skiing, coaching and racing for corporate teams. Some people attended the Saturday evening dinner specifically to bid on items such as the trip to Umberto Menghi’s Tuscany cooking school and the dinner for 10 at La Rúa with Chateau Whistler General Manager David Roberts and Blackcomb President Hugh Smythe waiting on the table. Both items sold for more than $3,000. The Blackcomb Foundation raised more than $135,000 for local charities at the first three Winter Classic events. A summer event, a two-day golf tournament, will be added in September. Contact Cathy Dixon at 925-9319 for more information or for funding applications.
