Thirty-eight townhouse units on Blackcomb were given conditional approval Monday, but the parking variance requested by Intrawest prompted council to ask staff for a report on parking variances. The townhouse project, dubbed "Treeline" and part of Blackcomb's Phase V development, complies with development allowed under the Blackcomb Land Use Contract. However, the developer has requested only 1.5 parking stalls be required for each unit. Municipal policy says two stalls are required for each unit. Acting Mayor Hugh O'Reilly and Councillor Dave Kirk both pointed out that the development will have an impact on the number of vehicles in the valley. "This is the third variance on the third project," Kirk said. "We have more presence of automobiles, but no compensation." Intrawest has done a study which it says shows only 1.5 parking stalls are required for each unit.
