Whistler RCMP arrested just three people for public intoxication on Friday night and nobody on Saturday, which is well below an average weekend and exceptionally low given the huge number of visitors in town for Crankworx.
The RCMP will have extra foot patrols in the village for the Monster Energy Slopestyle on Saturday night, which is expecting a crowd of 15,000, but generally the RCMP is happy with the level of co-operation with event organizers and private security.
Property thefts were down after a rash of reports in recent weeks, but RCMP still responded to one stolen vehicle complaint, and four vehicle break-ins. The stolen vehicle was a white 2007 Ford Econoline van with Washington plates, B416 73K, which was stolen between 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 and 6 a.m. the following morning from the underground lot under the Pan Pacific and Holiday Inn hotels. Two of the vehicle break-ins were reported in the day lots; one took place in Alpine Meadows and another in Creekside.
People are reminded once again not to leave any valuables in their vehicles, and to lock and secure their vehicles.
Landlord finds grow-op
A landlord for a rental property on Nesters Road discovered the remains of a marijuana grow operation when he was conducting an inspection of the property and contacted the RCMP. The tenants had moved out at the beginning of July but left behind telltale signs of a grow-op like dirt, water damage, staples and plastic.
Under B.C. law landlords are responsible for grow-ops on their property and insurance won't cover any damage that is the result of an operation. The RCMP remind landlords and property managers to inspect their properties frequently and to be on the lookout for grow operations.
Ontario man charged in vandalism
A man who stole and damaged eight pedestrian walk boxes in the early hours on Aug. 4 has agreed to pay $4,800 in restitution, due in October.
Derek Robinson, aged 30, was arrested after the RCMP received a complaint that a man was hitting a lamppost with a large stick. When officers arrived on the scene he was using a large rock to break off the box that activates pedestrian crossing lights.
Alcohol was a factor in the incident.
Robinson had no prior record and no fixed address in Whistler. According to the RCMP he has been living out of his van.
