Building on the growing popularity of ecotourism, Whistler-Blackcomb will be offering a new mountain tour this summer with a focus on climate change.
The tours will take place in the alpine, where the effects of climate change can be seen in a dramatic way.
“So bringing people to glaciers, up to the treeline, and showing our guests how climate change is affecting our mountain ecosystems with an emphasis on the alpine, because that is where the signs are most evident,” said Arthur DeJong, Whistler-Blackcomb’s manager of mountain planning and environmental resources.
The tours will kick off this summer but, just as the bear viewing tours began, they will start at a grassroots level.
DeJong has also been asked to speak at The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) in Oslo next month.
He said: “I’m trying to borrow more and more of their systems and values in seeing how we can integrate more ecotourism to our business.”
