Flu shots for Turkey Sale The travel Medicine & Vaccination Centre will be setting up shop again this year at the annual Turkey Sale & Ski Swap, Oct. 8, 9, 10 in the Upper Village, near Merlin’s and The Blackcomb Day Lodge. For the fifth year in a row, the travelling flu clinic has operated in conjunction with the Turkey Sale, and the price for vaccination is still $15. The service is aimed at people who do not qualify for a free flu shot from the family doctor. Statistics show the flu virus thrives in a typical office environment and will infect one in four working adults this winter. Each infected person will be absent from work for three-five days and individual productivity can be adversely affected for up to two weeks following infection. Further information is available by calling 932-4196. Ducks offer big prizes The annual duck race put on by Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Whistler is set to go this holiday Monday, Oct. 11. And the lucky winner will be whisking themselves off to Los Cabos, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta or Acapulco, courtesy of Whiski Jack Resorts in Whistler. The race, which has hundreds of little rubber yellow ducks all released at the same time in the rushing water of Fitzsimmons Creek, will begin at 2 p.m., up river from the covered bridge near Rebagliati Park. Safety Stars announced A new, annual program launched Oct. 3 by the Whistler Fire Department has been started to recognise individuals in the community who have made a positive contribution to residents’ safety in Whistler. The Safety Star Program is designed to recognise people and businesses within the community who have, through their positive actions or support of fire department programs, make everyone just a little bit safer. This year’s recipients are: o Warren Tomalty, Whistler RCMP. For his work with the children in Whistler through the D.A.R.E program. o Dwight MacMillan, Payless Auto Towing. For supplying time and vehicles for the extrication team to use for practice. The team’s success at the International competition was due partly to Dwight’s contribution. o Peter Dnistrianskyi, Chateau Whistler Resort. For his pro-active support to staff fire and emergency training. o Brian Sherk, Mountain Building Centres. For his generous and ongoing support for the extrication teams. Book Fair makes big bucks The annual book fair held recently at the Myrtle Philip Community Centre has left organizers happy with the books accumulated for the library and the amount of money raised to purchase new books. The library received $2,152 worth of books, to be made available to the public through normal lending. The fair also raised almost $3,000 in cash. Twenty-three parents volunteered their spare time to help with the sale.
