Like the legendary phoenix, and Whistler’s Keg building, the Delta Sun Peaks Resort has risen from the ashes.
An accident with a propane heater last October burned the new 220-room hotel down to its foundation, just weeks before it was scheduled to open. In the 10 months since then the hotel has been rebuilt and staff – including many from the Delta Village Suites in Whistler – are preparing for the Oct. 1 grand opening.
A true hotel, as opposed to a strata-titled building, the Delta Sun Peaks Resort is a partnership of Delta/Fairmont Hotels and the Sun Peaks Resort Corporation.
But more importantly, staff at the hotel and the resort feel the new hotel’s conference facilities will put Sun Peaks on the map for convention business.
Nearly 11,000 square feet of conference space have been included in the hotel and the main Sun Peaks Ballroom will be able to seat 600 people. Those dimensions make it one of the largest convention spaces in B.C. Perhaps more significantly, the conference facilities are several notches above anything currently available in the Okanagan or anywhere else in the Interior. In fact, they may well be on par with the Chateau Whistler’s conference facilities.
The quality of the conference facilities and Sun Peaks’ proximity to Interior cities, such as Prince George, Kelowna and Cranbrook, suggest the resort may capture a lot of B.C. conference business that currently goes to Vancouver or Whistler.
The hotel is also the new standard-bearer for the Delta hotel chain. Basic rooms are larger and of a higher quality than those found in many Delta hotels. There are a range of rooms in the hotel, including 34 which will be designated for the luxurious signature club service, similar to the Fairmont chain’s club service rooms.
The ski-in, ski-out hotel will also house a spa and Sun Peaks’ first true nightclub.
