Whistler Discovery Day is just days away, and according to organizers it’s shaping up to be big fun.
On June 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., businesses around town are inviting the community to come visit and participate in events.
The Resort Municipality of Whistler is pitching in by making the Whistler and Valley Express bus system free all day. They also exempted Whistler businesses from bylaws that prohibit sidewalk displays, signs, and various kinds of creative marketing.
Carney’s Waste Systems will be sharing the "lighter side of recycling" throughout the village, and Nesters Market and Wild Willies are teaming up offer "Come Ride With Us" preview outings. Keir Fine Jewelry will offer visitors a chance to "Dig for Diamonds" with a $1,000 nugget hidden in a tub of cubic zirconia – bring your jewellers loupe.
Activity and adventure operators will show their stuff around the village in the InterActivity Zone stretching from Mountain Square to Village Square.
If you haven’t made it up the mountain, you can visit Whistler-Blackcomb’s Mountaintop Adventure Tent in Village Square.
Function Junction businesses are putting together a barbecue, the Marketplace is hosting a sidewalk sale, and stores are putting on a fashion show with dogs and pets in the Village Centre.
One of the biggest attractions will be the Creekside Carnival in Alpha Lake Park with a barbecue, scavenger hunt, games and prizes.
Discovery Day also has prizes, donated by local businesses, to give away. There will be eight ballot boxes throughout town to give people a chance to win everything from flight-seeing tours, half-day guided hikes, hotel accommodation and dinner at the Westin Resort and Spa. The grand prize is a Whistler-Blackcomb 2001-2002 season’s pass.
Discovery Day is made possible with contributions from key community partners, including Pique Newsmagazine, the Whistler Question, Mountain FM, Origin Design, Howe Sound Community Futures, Whistler-Blackcomb, the RMOW, and the North Shore Credit Union.
