Former chamber president takes up new position in Squamish

Whistler’s former chamber of commerce president has been hired by the District of Squamish as its new deputy administrator.

Brent Leigh will take up his new role Oct. 18.

"(Leigh’s) key strengths in communication, strategic planning and project implementation will support and leverage the talents in the district staff resources," said Squamish Mayor Ian Sutherland.

In taking up the position Leigh is returning to some old stomping grounds as he worked as the Economic Development Officer and headed up special project co-ordination for Squamish before coming to Whistler in 2002.

He has a wealth of experience in the private and public sectors and in local government where he has served as both an elected official and a member of staff.

In his new role Leigh will assist Squamish’s chief administrative officer, Kim Anema. And the management team as they guide the district through an unprecedented period of growth.

Leigh was also responsible for helping to guide Whistler’s own chamber of commerce into a more significant role in the community.

He moved the Whistler Chamber of Commerce from a small log cabin in Creekside to its modern offices and visitor centre in the village. He also helped grow connections throughout the corridor and with stakeholder partners in the resort.

Leigh also helped spearhead the new Whistler Card, the growth of the Spirit Program and the vast improvements seen in the Visitor Information Centre.
