A GoFundMe is underway to help raise money for a well-known DJ who has been a fixture in the Whistler nightclub scene for decades after he was badly injured in a bike crash last Friday, Oct. 2.

Mat Andrew, better known as Mat the Alien, was rushed to Vancouver General Hospital for emergency surgery on his vertebrae and spinal cord.

"While it's still very early on and new information continues to come in daily, we know that Mat is currently paralyzed from the chest down," the GoFundMe page reads. "This road to recovery will be a long and emotional battle for Mat. While we all know he is not one to shy away from a challenge, this is going to be the biggest fight of his life."

In just six hours, 554 people donated more than $40,000 towards the $200,000 goal to help "with the costs associated with his recovery," the page says. "Times are difficult for us right now, but Mat needs his family, friends and fans more than ever to see the light at the end of the tunnel."

It goes on to say that his brain appears to be undamaged and his family will offer more updates as he recovers.
