The Whistler Library/Museum project got some good news this week, a pledge of $25,000.

The money comes from the Christopher Foundation; a Vancouver based private foundation.

"This is a significant contribution to the building of the educational heart of Whistler, and indicates the commitment of our community to the success of this fundraising drive," said Anne Fenwick, Chairperson of the Capital Campaign.

"We thank The Christopher Foundation for stepping up to the cause early in our campaign."

To date $5.6 million has been raised of the $10 million needed to build the 27,000 square foot building.

The resort Municipality of Whistler has contributed $5 million, the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation has donated $400,000, and other smaller contributions make up the rest.

Construction is tentatively scheduled to start next May, providing 80 per cent of the funding has been raised. It’s hoped the building will open late 2004 early 2005.

The new building will incorporate the Whistler Public Library, the Whistler Museum & Archives, and the Whistler Community Arts Council office, along with a civic hall and multi-purpose meeting area.

Preliminary designs for the Main Street building are expected within two weeks.

Each year, almost 10,000 tourists visit the museum, while the Whistler Public Library receives 23,000 tourist visits and 112,000 local visits annually.

The Whistler Library/Museum & Archives Capital Campaign officially kicked off on March 23 rd .
