Prime minister still hasn’t set date for federal election

Residents in the Sea-to-Sky corridor should know by March 21 st who all the candidates will be in the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast riding when the writ is dropped for the next federal election.

The Liberal party will be the last major party to choose a candidate because the Conservative Party and the Greens have already chosen candidates and the New Democratic Party will nominate a candidate on Sunday.

The situation could change before the federal election, but currently Pemberton is part of the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast riding. A bill that would realign the riding, making Pemberton part of a Fraser Valley riding, could still be passed prior to the election being called.

Despite the sponsorship scandal currently rocking Ottawa, Prime Minister Paul Martin is still expected to call an election sometime this spring.

Meanwhile, the Green Party awarded Andrea Goldsmith the role as candidate Monday and she is expected to campaign in Whistler on March 17.

John Reynolds, who is the current MP for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast, won the Conservative Party’s nomination unopposed. Reynolds acclamation was announced last week.

The NDP, who have made enormous gains in B.C. during the past month, according to polls, will chose either Dana Larson, Alice Lutes or Nicholas Simons as their candidate on Sunday at the Seychelles Legion hall. The meeting starts at 2:30 p.m.

The Liberals have three candidates to represent the party in the riding. They are expected to chose their candidate at a meeting on March 21.

The candidates are Phil Boname, John Moonen and Blair Wilson. Boname has won the Liberal nomination previously and may be the favourite to represent the Liberals again. He lost to Reynolds in the last Federal election by a small margin.

Any Liberal supporters who want to vote for a West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast candidate must be registered with the party by the close of business Friday.
