Thirty-one people in Whistler have applied to the municipality for permits to rent out their homes to Olympic workforce members during the upcoming Winter Games.
According to Naomi Devine, Whistler 2020 Sustainability Coordinator for the Resort Municipality of Whistler, 21 Temporary Commercial Use Permits (TCUPs) have been issued to date and 10 more should be approved by the end of January.
Among the addresses hoping to get temporary permission to rent on a nightly basis are 10 on Eagle Ridge Crescent, six on Alta Lake Road, four on Eagle Drive, three on Brandywine Way, two on Taylor Way and one each on Gondola Way, Hillcrest Drive, Bayshore Drive, Clifftop Lane and Par Road.
Accommodation TCUPs are administered by the municipality and allow nightly rentals in homes that are normally not allowed to rent out on a night-by-night basis. The permits are designed to accommodate Olympic workers, volunteers, contractors and media. People who receive accommodation TCUPs may not rent out their places on a nightly basis to tourists.
The accommodation TCUP application deadline was Dec. 1, 2009, and included a $300 non-refundable application fee.
To try and ensure existing tenants did not get kicked out of their homes as result of the accommodation TCUPs, the municipality also set up a Tenant Registry this fall, which can be accessed at renters@whistler.ca. A total of 16 unique addresses have been on the registry, and the last one was added at the beginning of December, said municipal communication officer Jessica Delaney.
