Hunks under the hammer Whistler women are, once again, being given an opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the resort's nicest, friendliest and, perhaps most important — best looking — men around. Get those day planners out and pencil in Wednesday, Sept. 1. That's the day of the Second Annual Bachelor Auction slated for Buffalo Bill's, starting at 9 p.m. This year's bachelor bonanza includes local heroes Rob Boyd, Ritchie Schley, Chad Miles, Bruce Spicer and more guaranteed to get those hormones going. Masters of ceremony Mike "The Legend" Christie and Kristin Robinson will accepts bids from the Bill's crowd. The highest bidder gets her man. The package includes a Sept. 2 Loonie Race ride with her bachelor for a lesson in mountain biking. She also earns dinner and a show at the Longhorn. And, all the fun is for a good cause. The monies raised will go directly towards the Whistler Off Road Cycling Association trail maintenance contract for next season. Funds will also help with youth programs already in place, including the Geoff "Lumpy" Leidal Award. Tickets are available for $7 in advance at the Whistler Bike Co., the Glacier Shop, FanatykCo and at the Loonie races. Tickets are $10 at the door. Whistler firefighters go to the dogs Saturday, Aug. 28 and Sunday, Aug. 29. to aid Whistler Animals Galore — a non profit organization that helps place homeless or abused animals in permanent or foster homes. The firefighters will be hosting the eighth annual doggie wash at the Fire Hall from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. All dog owners are invited to bring their hounds for a hose-down and some pampering. All funds raised go toward WAG vet fees, pet food, supplies and administration costs. Without the support of WAG, many animals would have to be destroyed. Anyone who wants to volunteer for the event can call 938-8642. Raid the cupboard and ride for the food bank The Whistler Off Road Cycling Association will be holding a Foodraiser Loonie Race event Thursday, Sept. 2 in an effort to bolster the shelves of the Whistler Community Service's Food Bank before the winter brings in the hungry hoards. To participate in the race, riders must bring at least one 14 oz can of fruit or a plastic jar of peanut butter as well as the regular Twoonie fee. Winners will be determined through a point system which combines the rider's placing plus the number of food items carried during the race — creativity is the key here. Winner's, however, get to take home only bragging rights as the Twoonie kitty also goes to the food bank. Sign-on will be in the Village Square with a controlled roll-out at 6:30 p.m. led by the RCMP and the Bylaw Bike Patrol for a once-in-a life-time chance to cycle in the village. The course, which will take riders towards Lost Lake and up Blackcomb, will terminate at the Longhorn, where there will be refreshments, food ($4 charge) and live music by Mayhem Aquarium.
