The Whistler Museum and Archives Society has a special World Cup display during next week’s Hongkong Bank Whistler Ski Classic. Souvenirs, photos and assorted paraphernalia from previous World Cup races are on display, and the museum has extended its opening hours during the festival. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27 to Sunday, Nov. 30. The Whistler Public Library is holding an open house Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. The open house is a chance for everyone to check out what the library is all about and to ask any questions people may have regarding the museum’s switch from a public to a municipal library, effective Jan. 1, 1999. According to board member and municipal councillor Kristi Wells, the primary motivation for a change to municipal status was to assure funding for the library, rather than going to the municipality every year with requests for grants in aid. A second benefit is that library staff will become part of the municipal staff, eligible for municipal wage and benefits packages. New name for better job The Sea to Sky Freenet Association has changed its name to the Sea to Sky Communities Network Society to reflect its financial reality as a very low cost on-ramp to the Internet for those who do not have access to computers with a modem. The society’s mandate for the coming year includes expanding the number of public access terminals so more people can take advantage of the service. A group of nine directors will lead the society for the next year. John French is the chair, with Meg Fellowes, Mary Billy, Joel Pettit, Detlef Rudolph, Lesley Keith, Manuel Schulte, Gwynne Sykes and Jason Fiset filling out the executive. The society is also looking into a software program that will help make the system easier to use. By dialling up the Communities Network, users can get information on many different government bodies, organizations and events in Sea to Sky Country.
