Bloomin' deadline looms Get out there and water your perennials because entries for the municipal gardening contest are due in by Friday, July 31. The contest (open to all Whistler residents so no dragging lawns down from Pemberton) is part of the Communities in Bloom project. This is a nation-wide competition to determine which municipality has the best landscape on both public and private land. The RMOW is organizing the gardening contest as a way of involving the community in the action. You can enter in one or more of the categories: commercial or residential container gardens (bloomin' balconies), commercial or residential herb/vegetable gardens, commercial or residential flower gardens, the garden that best exemplifies the Whistler character or a miscellaneous category for anything else. The grand prize for the garden judged bloomin' best over all entries will win a weekend in Victoria at the CP Empress Hotel, courtesy of the Chateau Whistler, and a tour of the Butchart Gardens with the Empress' horticulturist. You'll fly there courtesy of Whistler and Harbour Air. Entry forms are available at the municipal hall, the chamber of commerce information booth or the sports centre. You can also call muni hall at 932-5535 for a faxed copy and to volunteer for the second Clean Up Day, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15, just in time for the Communities in Bloom judges to visit Whistler on Monday, Aug. 17.
