Couple celebrates first and 50th in Whistler Whistler's summertime charms apparently continue to hold a special place in the hearts of a Maple Ridge couple, who will be returning to the community for their 50th wedding anniversary. Ivy and Tom Charters travelled to Alex and Myrtle Philip's Rainbow Lodge at Alta Lake for their honeymoon in 1948, and the Charters will be coming back and checking into the Chateau Whistler for their 50th anniversary this weekend. A reception for the couple and their family and friends has been planned for Friday afternoon at their children Jim and Kim Charters' home in Whistler; Ivy and Tom will be enjoying the executive suite at the Chateau. Pemberton food bank re-opens The Pemberton food bank is back in business after closing last fall due to the illness of a valuable volunteer. A joint effort of Sea to Sky Community Services, community volunteers, the Pemberton and District Health Care Foundation and St. David's United Church has enabled the food bank to start up again. As yet there are limited resources so the next distribution date will be Aug. 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the basement of St. David's United Church. Anyone needing the food bank's services is required to fill out an application form from Sea to Sky Community Services. They will then be given a voucher to present on distribution day. All requests are handled in a confidential manner. The food bank is in need of volunteers to help with distribution days, shopping and fund-raising. Anyone interested should call Sea to Sky Community Services at 894-6101. Rossland begins village The first phase of village development at Rossland is about to begin this fall with construction of the Rossland Springs Hotel. The 96-room, four-star hotel will be built by Premier Mountain Land Corporation of Kelowna. Completion is forecast for the spring of 1999. Premier built the Coast Hotel at Big White, which opened in December of 1997. Rossland’s village development will follow plans created by Whistler-based Brent Harley and Associates.
