As part of its ongoing efforts to get locals to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, the Whistler One-Tonne Challenge program has announced a new thermostat campaign with Home Hardware and Gescan Electrical Supplies in Function Junction.
Both businesses are offering up to 25 per cent off programmable energy efficient thermostats that can be set to increase or decrease room temperature at certain times of the day.
"It’s a great incentive because not only are people saving money on the cost of a programmable thermostat, but they save even more once they’re installed," said Mar Zurbuchen, Whistler’s One-Tonne Challenge co-ordinator. "For every one degree Celsius you lower your thermostat you save two per cent on your heating bill. That adds up. You just set it and forget it."
It’s estimated that a programmable thermostat can save up to 500 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions.
Each year it’s estimated that the average Canadian contributes five tonnes of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The One-Tonne Challenge program, funded by the federal government, is geared to reducing the total by 20 per cent, or one tonne per person.
