Newly trained and certified peer counsellors are ready to help.

During November and December, 11 Whistler youths, aged 21 to 29, took part in an intense training program to help them learn how to help others.

Said one: "The course educated us on how and where to guide our peers to services they didn’t know existed."

Another said: " I’m looking forward to using what I’ve learned to help my peers have a safe and enjoyable experience while here in Whistler."

The purpose of the program was to have peers provide general support and information about free service agencies in the community, as an extension of the services provided by Whistler Youth Outreach Worker, Greg McDonnell. One of the main objectives was to provide youth with the tools and skills necessary to support their peers when faced with challenges around drugs and alcohol, relationships, housing, employment, mental health, hunger and healthy sexuality.

The counsellors volunteer five hours a week and try to connect with other youth around town.

A workshop is also being planned with the date and place yet to be set.

For more information or donations, please feel free to contact Janet McDonald, Whistler Community Services Society Executive Director at 604.932.0113 or Greg McDonnell, Community Youth Outreach Worker at 604.938.3902.
