Whistler now has business regulations governing the operation of commercial kennels and sled dog operators.
The regulations set a number of conditions for commercial operators, including: providing a separate shelter for each dog; daily cleanup and sanitization of the kennel compound; separate pens for female dogs in heat and female dogs with litters; licences for all dogs, and allowing licensing inspectors, animal control officers, RCMP members and SPCA officers to inspect the kennels at reasonable times.
The new regulations came about after a request by Cougar Mountain Adventures to zone property for a kennel for the companys sled dog operation. At that time council suggested staff look into regulations to ensure the welfare of sled dogs.
